The Story of Tommy
Tommy Oliver, my namesake, played by Jason David Frank, started
out in late 1930 as the Green Ranger. He
was a new kid who had moved to Angel Grove and was recruited by Rita to do
her evil bidding as her evil Green Ranger.
After giving all of the rangers the
challenge of their lives, Tommy returned to the side of good with the help of Zordon and the other rangers. A while later in the first season, Tommy
was threatened when Rita created the Green Candle, forged from a special wax
that he had touched when he worked for her.
Jason tried to get the candle, but he had to choose between Tommy’s powers or risking his life, thus he lost his powers.
But instead of losing them to Rita, Tommy transferred the power to Jason, and he left the team. Tommy, even without the powers, supported the rangers and backed them
up completely. When Parent’s Day came,
Rita kidnapped the ranger’s parents and had Goldar
trick the rangers into giving him their power coins.
Tommy had to save the day once again as Zordon
fused his own power into Tommy so that he could get the coins back. He succeeded, and the box he touched
recharged his powers, but they were still limited.
From then on, Tommy only used his powers when absolutely necessary. When the sixty episodes ended and season two
began, Tommy’s powers were threatened by Lord Zedd. The rangers got new Thunder zords, but Tommy still had the same, limited powers. Zedd tried numerous times to defeat Tommy, using all sorts
of monsters and tricks, to steal Tommy’s powers.
The Green Ranger came on strong, but had his powers permanently taken away, as did the other
rangers. Tommy faced Goldar
without his powers, but when he was reminded of all the
good he did as himself and not as a ranger, he regained his self-confidence,
defeated Goldar without his powers, stormed Zedd’s
lair to get his and the other rangers’ powers back, and saved the world from
destruction solo. He was a true hero,
but his green powers were still almost completely gone. Tommy went away for vacation at his uncle’s
cabin for a month, and all the rangers missed
him. Finally, when Tommy announced his
return, the other rangers planned a huge surprise for him. At the same time, Alpha and Zordon
disappeared without a trace, and Zedd’s new Nimrod
monster defeated the rangers. At the last minute, Billy stumbled upon a
secret area of the command center, in which Zordon
and Alpha were finishing their newest
ranger…The White Ranger!
All the rangers gathered around as the
identity of the new leader of the power rangers was revealed…..as TOMMY OLIVER!!!!
Upgraded to White, Tommy gave up Dragonzord and the dragon dagger to use the White Tigerzord and Saba!
With Tommy as the leader, the rangers underwent ranger chances, and the
team changed. Then, when Rito came to celebrate Rita and Zedd’s
wedding with the Tenga warriors, the rangers lost their
Thunder and Dinozords and had to get yet another
breed of zords and power, in which Tommy led the quest to the
Desert of Despair, where the rangers met the creator of the power coins, Ninjor,
and received the Ninja powers, making Tommy’s zord the White Falconzord. This was
in the beginning of the third season, and Tommy remained the leader. After Kimberly leaves for gymnastics, Tommy
bids farewell to his love and sets his sights on Katherine, especially when Kim
writes Tommy and tells him about the guy she meets. The rangers are then transformed into
children again by Master Vile, and they need the help of the rangers of Aquitar to regain their powers.
Tommy leads the team to collect the ZEO Crystal and become the ZEO Rangers!
Tommy becomes the leader and controls the Phoenix zord,
then later the the Red Battlezord
and Super Star Zord, after having controlled the
White Falconzord and White Shogunzords. Tommy makes out to be a fine leader, and he
even recruits old friend, Jason, to become the new Gold Ranger. When the Machine Empire was finally defeated, Divatox attacked the earth, forcing the rangers to gain new
Turbo powers and become the Turbo Rangers, with
Justin and Tanya on the team and Billy on Aquitar, Tommy finds himself the lone surviving ranger
of the original mighty morphin’ team. To make matters worse, Zordon
and Alpha 5 return to their home planet of Eltar, leaving Tommy in unknown territory. Finally, one fateful day, Tommy is attacked
and captured by Divatox in an attempt to steal the
leader of the power rangers. He passes the
leadership of the team to T.J., and Tommy’s career as a ranger ends, although
as they all say, once a ranger, always a ranger. Tommy will always be remembered as the only
ranger to have survived five out of ten seasons, 225 episodes out of 445, and
to have had five different ranger powers.
He is truly the greatest of the rangers in the hearts of any true ranger
fan and fictional character of the show.
But Tommy’s reign of power would not end there. He
would soon return to the rangers for the special reunion episode that is
FOREVER RED. And quite possibly, he could return to
the rangers in Ninja Storm, although we will have to wait and see………
